Luminous Blue Variables & Mass Loss near the Eddington Limit

During the course of their evolution, massive stars lose a substantial fraction of their initial mass, both through steady winds and through relatively brief eruptions during their Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) phase. This talk reviews the dynamical driving of this mass loss, contrasting the line-driving of steady winds to the potential role of continuum driving for eruptions during LBV episodes...

Predictions of variable mass loss for Luminous Blue Variables

We present radiation-driven wind models for Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) and predict their mass-loss rates. We study the effects of lower masses and modified abundances in comparison to the normal OB supergiants, and we find that the main difference in mass loss is due to the lower masses of LBVs. In addition, we find that the increase in helium abundance changes the mass-loss properties by s...

Mass Loss from Luminous Blue Variables and Quasi-periodic Modulations of Radio Supernovae

Massive stars, supernovae (SNe), and long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a huge impact on their environment. Despite their importance, a comprehensive knowledge of which massive stars produce which SN/GRB is hitherto lacking. We present a brief overview about our knowledge of mass loss in the HertzsprungRussell Diagram (HRD) covering evolutionary phases of the OB main sequence, the unsta...

Eta Carinae and Other Luminous Blue Variables

Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are believed to be evolved, extremely massive stars close to the Eddington Limit and hence prone to bouts of large-scale, unstable mass loss. I discuss current understanding of the evolutionary state of these objects, the role duplicity may play and known physical characteristics of these stars using the X-ray luminous LBVs Eta Carinae and HD 5980 as test cases.

On the population of galactic Luminous Blue Variables

We report the first results of a long term infrared monitoring campaign of known and candidate galactic Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). In particular, we are able to confirm the LBV nature of G24.73+0.69, a luminous mid-B supergiant associated with a dusty ejection nebula. We find that prior to 2003 September G24.73+0.69 exhibited low amplitude (∆JHK ∼ 0.4 mag) variability, but in the ∼200 day ...
